WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) — A Navajo Code Talker who used his native language to outsmart the Japanese in World Conflict II has died in Arizona.
Navajo Nation officers say Teddy Draper Sr. died Thursday at age ninety six within the small metropolis of Prescott.
Tribal officers say Draper lived in Chinle, Arizona.
Draper and different Navajos adopted within the footsteps of the unique 29 who developed the code.
He was a part of the fifth Marine Division, fought within the Battle of Iwo Jima and acquired a Purple Coronary heart in addition to a Congressional Silver Medal.
Funeral plans have been pending and an inventory of Draper’s survivors wasn’t instantly obtainable Thursday.
