Hawaii trial set for psychiatric patient charged in escape


A person who spent many years in a Hawaii psychiatric hospital for killing a lady needs to go to trial on escape and id theft costs after authorities stated he fled the power and flew to California earlier than being captured, his defense lawyer stated Thursday.

Randall Saito appeared by way of video from a Honolulu jail on Thursday and watched as lawyer Michael Inexperienced entered a not guilty plea on his behalf at his arraignment.

“He needs to get his story out there,” Inexperienced advised The Related Press.

In November 2017, authorities stated Saito walked out of Hawaii State Hospital, where he was despatched in 1981 after he was acquitted of homicide by purpose of madness in the 1979 killing of Sandra Yamashiro.

After leaving the hospital, Saito referred to as a taxi that took him to the airport, the place he took a chartered flight to Maui. He used an alias to rearrange the flight and paid $1,445 money for it, prosecutors stated. Then he took a business flight to San Jose, California, prosecutors stated.

When he was arrested in Stockton, California three days after his escape, he had greater than $6,000 in money and faux Washington state and Illinois driver’s licenses bearing his photographs with totally different names, prosecutors stated.
