Transportation officials say passenger-only ferry service is about to begin on the North Carolina coast, however not on the vessel that was designated to make the run.
The N.C. Department of Transportation says on its website that the state is leasing the M/V Martha’s Winery Categorical to make three round-trip runs a day between Hatteras and Silver Lake in Ocracoke beginning on Monday.
The Charlotte Observer stories that NCDOT will spend about $1 million to lease the Martha’s Vineyard Categorical. The Ocracoke Categorical was imagined to be completed in April 2018, but delays and development problems pushed that date again, first to final fall after which this spring. When it was apparent that the boat wouldn’t be ready for this summer time, NCDOT started on the lookout for a substitute to lease.
